MicroCement is increasingly being specified in Vancouver homes for bathrooms, showers, fireplaces, floors, feature walls and other architectural surfaces.

Its appeal is straightforward. MicroCement creates a continuous, hand-applied finish with subtle tonal movement and few visual interruptions. In suitable renovation projects, it can also be applied over existing surfaces, including suitable tile, reducing unnecessary demolition.

However, choosing MicroCement should involve more than selecting a colour from a sample.

At RPH MicroCement Finishes, we believe homeowners, designers, and builders should understand the proposed system, the condition of the substrate beneath it, and why different MicroCement formulations suit different applications.

MicroCement Is a System, Not Simply a Decorative Finish

The visible MicroCement surface is only one part of a completed installation.

Depending on the project and substrate, a MicroCement installation can involve substrate assessment and preparation, bonding primers, base materials, multiple MicroCement applications, pre-sealers and protective top coats.

For wet areas, waterproofing must also be properly addressed.

This matters because the appearance of a completed MicroCement project does not, by itself, tell you how the underlying surface was prepared or which material system was used.

A professionally specified installation begins with the intended use of the surface.

Resin-Based vs Water-Based MicroCement

RPH MicroCement Finishes provides both resin-based and water-based MicroCement systems.

They are not treated as interchangeable products.

Resin-Based MicroCement

RPH's resin-based MicroCement is our premium formula and is typically selected for applications requiring greater durability, including:

  • Showers

  • Bathroom floors

  • High-traffic areas

  • Other demanding residential surfaces

The resin component forms part of the MicroCement system and contributes to the performance characteristics required for these applications.

Water-Based MicroCement

Our water-based MicroCement system is suited to appropriate decorative and architectural applications outside demanding wet areas, including:

  • Fireplaces

  • Feature walls

  • Architectural details

  • Selected vertical surfaces

Choosing between the two should therefore begin with where and how the finished surface will be used, rather than colour alone.

Can MicroCement Be Applied Over Existing Tile?

In suitable circumstances, yes.

This is one of the most useful applications of MicroCement in renovation work.

Where existing tile is sound, stable and suitable for the proposed system, RPH can prepare the surface and apply MicroCement over it. This can eliminate the need for unnecessary tile demolition while completely changing the visual character of the room.

RPH has completed Vancouver and Lower Mainland projects where dated tiled tub surrounds and bathroom walls have been transformed into contemporary continuous MicroCement surfaces while retaining suitable existing tile underneath.

There is, however, an important qualification.

MicroCement should not be marketed as a universal “no demolition” product.

The existing surface must first be assessed. Loose tile, movement, unsuitable substrates, moisture problems or other deficiencies may require correction before MicroCement should be applied.

Reducing demolition is an advantage when the existing substrate permits it. It should not come at the expense of proper preparation.

MicroCement for Vancouver Bathrooms and Showers

Bathrooms are particularly well suited to the architectural qualities of MicroCement.

Instead of dividing a room into individual tiles and grout lines, MicroCement can allow walls, tub surrounds and other properly designed surfaces to read as larger continuous architectural forms.

RPH's bathroom projects have included MicroCement shower surrounds, tub surrounds, walls, floors, niches and other integrated details.

Colours can range from Snow White and Calm Cream through warm greys, darker Carbon Grey finishes and custom pigmentation.

Because MicroCement is hand-applied, controlled tonal movement and subtle variations in texture are characteristic of the material. These variations interact with natural and artificial light differently throughout the day.

That individuality is part of what separates MicroCement from a factory-manufactured surface.

Waterproofing and MicroCement Are Different Things

This distinction is particularly important in showers.

A decorative MicroCement surface and the waterproofing strategy beneath a wet area should not be confused.

Where waterproofing forms part of RPH's contracted work, it is treated as a separate stage of the installation before the MicroCement finishing system.

Where underlying construction, waterproofing, drywall, sheathing, framing or other substrate work has been completed by others, responsibility for that work remains distinct from RPH's responsibility for the materials and systems it installs.

This separation matters technically.

MicroCement should not be expected to correct structural movement, defective framing, unsuitable underlying construction or water intrusion originating outside the MicroCement system.

A responsible applicator should identify these boundaries before work begins.

Substrate Preparation Is Critical

One of the most important questions to ask before discussing the finished MicroCement colour is:

What is underneath it?

MicroCement is a thin architectural finish. It follows the geometry of the prepared surface rather than functioning as a structural rebuilding material.

Where a surface is not sufficiently smooth or flat for direct MicroCement application, RPH can use MicroBase and appropriate preparation processes to create a suitable application surface where technically appropriate.

Visible substrate concerns should be addressed before decorative applications begin.

This is particularly important around corners, penetrations, transitions, shower components and areas where different building materials meet.

MicroCement Fireplaces and Architectural Features

MicroCement also offers considerable design flexibility outside bathrooms.

RPH has completed MicroCement fireplaces and architectural features throughout Vancouver, North Vancouver and West Vancouver using finishes ranging from understated Snow White and Calm Cream to deeply textured Carbon Grey.

MicroCement can be applied across appropriately constructed forms so that separate faces, edges and returns visually become a single architectural element.

This is particularly effective on modern fireplaces.

Instead of treating the fireplace merely as a surface to decorate, MicroCement can emphasize its geometry and allow it to read as a monolithic feature within the room.

RPH has also applied MicroCement to appropriately prepared MDF fireplace structures and other custom architectural forms.

What Does a MicroCement Finish Actually Look Like?

MicroCement should not be expected to look like paint, porcelain or a uniformly manufactured sheet material.

It is hand applied.

Trowel technique, pigmentation, texture, lighting and application sequence contribute to the finished appearance.

Depending on the selected finish, this can produce:

Subtle tonal movement. Slight changes in colour and density across the surface.

Hand-applied texture. Visible evidence of the application process rather than mechanical uniformity.

Depth. Multiple applications contribute to a surface that responds differently as lighting changes.

Visual continuity. Large architectural surfaces can be finished without the repeating grid associated with conventional tile.

For clients considering MicroCement, samples are therefore useful for understanding the general colour, texture and character of the selected finish.

What Should You Ask a MicroCement Applicator?

Before comparing MicroCement proposals purely by price, homeowners, designers and builders should understand exactly what is being offered.

Useful questions include:

  • Is the proposed MicroCement resin-based or water-based?

  • Why is that system appropriate for this particular application?

  • Has the existing substrate been assessed?

  • What preparation is included?

  • Can suitable existing tile be retained?

  • Who is responsible for waterproofing?

  • What sealing system will be applied?

  • What work must other trades complete before MicroCement begins?

  • How will plumbing penetrations and other interfaces be handled?

  • What natural variation should be expected from the finished surface?

  • Who is responsible for underlying construction completed by others?

A clear answer to these questions is more useful than simply being told that MicroCement is “waterproof,” “seamless,” or “luxury.”

Our Approach to a MicroCement Project

RPH's process begins before materials are applied.

Prospective clients provide information about their project so that we can prepare a Project Price Proposal.

Once the proposal is accepted, an onsite consultation can be arranged to review the project, samples, visible substrate conditions, preparation requirements and, where relevant, wet-area considerations.

This approach allows the proposed MicroCement system to be considered in relation to the actual application rather than treating every project as technically identical.

A Different Approach to Architectural Surfaces

The strongest MicroCement projects are not simply about removing grout lines.

They are about understanding the relationship between material, substrate, colour, texture, light and architecture.

A Calm Cream bathroom can use subtle tonal movement to soften a compact interior. A Carbon Grey fireplace can use heavier texture to create architectural presence. Snow White MicroCement can turn a constructed fireplace into a clean monolithic form. Existing tile can sometimes become the foundation for an entirely different bathroom rather than automatically becoming demolition waste. These are different applications requiring different decisions.

That is how RPH MicroCement Finishes approaches MicroCement.
